Tax Preparation: Pen and Paper
I’ve talked about tax preparation services and tax preparation software, but what if you just want to do it yourself, the old-fashioned way? Used to be, you could get the forms you needed at the library or the Post Office, and fill it out by hand. No more. So where can you get the forms you need?
The IRS has set up a page on their website that has all the information you need to file your taxes, including links to download the standard forms. Or if you aren’t able to download or prefer not to, you can fill out a form and they’ll mail them to you.
For your state income tax forms, this site has links to all 50 states’ tax authorities. Go to the sites of the state or states you need and see if they offer downloaded or mailed copies of your state tax forms.
Remember, you can also have IRS publications mailed to you, if you prefer not to read them online. So if you run into any problems or need to deal with something complex in this year’s taxes, request or download the publications you might need at the same time as your forms.
